Amy with her horses Pom and Ruby
When Hurricane Irene devastated my life and home this past August 2011, I was so moved by the help and assistance that came to us in so many ways. Three days after the flood, I received a call from a good friend, Amy Sheehy. Amy was the first barefoot trimmer I called to help me learn to trim my own horses. She was IIEP Certified and a Team EasyCare Member. I shadowed her for 9 months as I went through my first term ESA classes. She really encouraged me and told me this area needs someone like me. She was a very important part of my journey to where I am today as a trimmer- she provided the foundation, and for that I will always be grateful. Last Fall (2010) she found out that she had ovarian cancer, and went for surgery. During that time I trimmed many of her client horses spread out through her northern trimming area. She recovered well and had all her client horses back by spring. Well, her call was to tell me that her cancer had returned. She had to retire from trimming and asked if I would again take her clients that I did last fall, this time for good. I was not able to get to them until October because of my own circumstances recovering from a flooded home, but now I have them all on my book again. She started treatment with chemo- it was rough, and I spoke with her recently, and she told me it is not working and the cancer is spreading. Her only hope is to travel to TX to the Burzynski Clinic. I don't do FaceBook, but she has a page that explains everything. Her insurance will not cover this treatment, so I told her that I would help her with fundraising. If you do FaceBook, friend her, tell all your friends.
I know that times are tough for many of us, and this is the holidays too, but little bits add up when community steps up to help friends, peers and those in need. We could have never recovered as much as we did from the flooding without the many volunteers who came to help us. For her, this is life or death. Please spread the word. Together we can help her get the help she needs in Texas.
